A DPID in mail terms equates to a Delivery Point IDentifier. In short, it is a digital representation of the address where you would like to send your letter to.
Essentially when you send a hand written letter through the mail, Australia Post will use scanning machines to turn this into a digital address and then compare this to its database of deliverable addresses within Australia (each address is represented by a barcode) and this database is also known as the Postal Address file of PAF.
Once the correct DPID has been determined using this method, the barcode is then sprayed onto the envelope allowing it to be processed by the high speed sorting machines at the post office.
For those customers who are sending high volumes of mail (more than 300 in one size category) you are able to purchase software that is able to find the correct DPID and affix it to your own mailings. As you are doing part of the post office’s work for them, you are then able to attract a discount on you postage. Please keep in mind that there is more involved than described here to meet with all of the Post Offices rules to attract the available discount.
Another key benefit of putting DPID’s on your bulk outgoing mail is that it will help you to cut down on the amount of return to sender items as it will automatically separate intended addresses that do not match up with the PAF and give you the option to not send this mail out. This is very important in particular with purchased or rented marketing databases as it can help you to greatly reduce the cost of your campaign and ultimately increase your return on investment.
If the thought of investing in potentially complicated software is too much for you but you still want to cut down on your return to senders as well as getting discounts on your postage, one option that is available to you is to outsource this process.
