A simple daily rate to pick up and collect your mail might seem like a great idea but the hidden costs can quickly add up and be very difficult to audit and budget for.
A few examples of hidden costs charged by some providers include:
1) Charges For Collecting Registered Post Items – Essentially the logic here is that Registered Items are not put into the PO Box but rather the provider has to go to the counter to sign for the items before delivering them – thus attracting an additional charge. The reality is that the Post Offices make these items ready for the mail couriers each day along with the rest of the mail and this charge is nothing more than a grab for cash. Additionally, you cannot control the amount of registered post that your business receives and therefore you cannot control your costs and it is very difficult to reconcile this charge when you receive your invoice.
2) Charges for Collecting Parcels – Exactly the same as Registered Post Items, larger items that cannot fit into your PO Box are collected from behind the counter at the post office. Again, you can’t control the volume of these items and if you are being charged additional fees for this you cannot control the costs. These additional extras have been charged out as much as a few dollars per item.
3) Charges for excess weight – If your business is regularly sending out large volumes of mail or heavy items than you may be subject to weight charges from your provider.
4) Charges for waiting time – If you are rushing around to prepare urgent mail and ask your mail courier to wait for a few moment whilst you get that last urgent letter ready, you may be charged for this time so beware!
